Lesson 5 - NetLibrary

1. I did a search using the keyword of "South Dakota history." Five books came up as a results. Overall, I think this could be a great resource for someone who wanted more information about a specific topic. I think that if a person came in looking for a specific book, they could be disappointed because a couple of books that I looked for were not in the database. However, I could see recommending this to someone needing to do research. One of the features I thought was the most useful was that you could search within the text for certain terms. I tried searching "Dust Bowl," and this narrowed my search down to specific terms. I think this source could also be useful for people who want to look a book, and then maybe be it because I do not think very many people would want to read an entire book on their computer, but for research this is very handy.

2. Some titles that could be recommended for further reading about Constitution Day include A Companion to the United States Constitution and Its Amendments by John R. Vile or Representing Popular Sovereignty: The Constitution in American Political Culture. They could also read more about the Bill of Rights or the Constitution which seem to be available using this source.

3. I typed in "Nebraska," and there seem to be some good sources such as one covering the period between Fort Laramie and Wounded Knee as well as one on Lewis and Clark, and also one on the authenticity of the image of the American West. Interspersed among these were many sources about modern Nebraska, so a student would just need to be careful to watch for ones that covered the period they were interested in.

  1. You're right, SoDak, this is best used for research. NetLibrary is a collection of titles purchased by the State Library with an emphasis on materials to expand public library collections. It can also be useful for school research, as you mention. We think it's a great resource, especially for those last-minute needs. How would you rate the ease of use? Thanks for your comments.
